Police spokesman Mirjam Boers said the 46-year-old truck driver was originally from Spain. According to the police, the accident took place on Saturday evening in the village of Nieuw-Bijerland.

Boers said that the driver was not drunk at the time of the accident. The speeding truck slipped from the dam and entered the crowd of people in the village.
