In this report titled ‘Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India’, it has been told that in the last year 2021, 1,64,033 people died due to suicide. In this, the share of suicides of daily wage laborers was one-fourth. That is, every fourth person who committed suicide in the country last year was a daily wage worker.

More than 1.64 lakh deaths were recorded in India due to suicide in 2021. Around 450 daily and 18 suicide cases were reported every hour, which is the highest ever suicide cases. About 1.19 lakh men, 45,026 women and 28 transgenders were among those who died by suicide.

Only 2.9 percent people commit suicide due to love affair and 2.3 percent due to dowry fights, drugs and poverty. According to the report, men commit suicide due to social and economic problems and women due to personal and emotional reasons.

Highest share of daily wage laborers
Last year in 2021, the daily wage laborers were the largest group in terms of death due to suicide. 42,004 daily wage laborers died by suicide, which is 25.6 percent of the total suicides. In the year 2020, 1,53,052 suicide cases were registered in the country. In this there were 37,666 cases of suicides of daily wage laborers, which is 24.6 percent of the total suicides. In the year 2019 i.e. before the Kovid period, 1,39,123 cases of death by suicide were registered in the country. In this, the number of daily wage laborers was 32,563, which is 23.4 percent of the total suicides.

Housewife and student group also increased suicide
During 2021, suicides in the ‘housewife’ category accounted for 14.1 percent of the total suicides. The number of suicide cases in this category increased by 3.6 per cent from 22,374 in 2020 to 23,179 in 2021. The report shows that the number of student suicides recorded in 2021 was 13,089, which was 12,526 in 2020. At the same time, the number of suicides of retired people in 2021 stood at 1,518, while 23,547 suicides were registered in the category of ‘other persons’. According to the report, 10,881 suicide cases were registered in 2021 in a group of people engaged in farming, including 5,318 ‘farmers’ and 5,563 ‘agricultural labourers’.

Increase in suicide cases
According to the NCRB data, 1.53 lakh suicide deaths were registered across the country in 2020. The report showed that the number of suicides in 2019 was 1.39 lakh, in 2018 it was 1.34 lakh, in 2017 it was 1.29 lakh. At the same time, there was more than 1.50 lakh in 2020 and 2021. What were the reasons for suicide?
NCRB said in its annual report for 2021 that professional or career problems, feelings of loneliness, abuse, violence, family problems, mental disorders, alcohol addiction, financial loss were all due to suicide. The NCRB said that it draws this data from the cases of suicide registered by the police across the country.

Highest number of suicide deaths in these states
According to the report, Maharashtra recorded the highest number of 22,207 suicide cases in 2021. After this 18,925 cases were registered in Tamil Nadu, 14,956 in Madhya Pradesh, 13,500 in West Bengal and 13,056 in Karnataka. Delhi has the highest number of 2,840 suicide cases among the Union Territories. According to the report, the suicide rate (ie suicide incidents per one lakh population) was recorded at 12.
