Kolkata: With the swearing-in of nine new judges in the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, the number of judges increased to 54. According to senior advocates, this number is the highest in the last several decades.

The sanctioned strength of judges in the country’s oldest high court, the Calcutta High Court, is 72. Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava administered the oath to nine judges at a function held in the High Court.

President of the Calcutta High Court Bar Association, Arunabh Ghosh, while welcoming the new judges, assured them of all support from the advocates. “We have a very good group of judges, who are very honest and we have a very cordial relationship with all of us,” he said.

Welcoming the new appointments, Advocate General S. N. Mukherjee said that he has never seen more than 50 judges working together in the Calcutta High Court during his tenure of practice for more than 36 years.

He said, “I hope that all the judges and members of the Bar who took oath today will work together to deliver justice and enforce the law.” There have been many new appointments in a few months.
