In fact, last month he fell on the treadmill after a cardiac arrest and in the gym. In such a situation, many questions arise in the mind, like what should be the limit of exercising and are we making our body work too hard to stay fit? Is people’s obsession with being slim trim putting a strain on their hearts?

You might be surprised to know this but Indian Express Cardiologists say that 150 minutes of any exercise every week is enough and more effort does not guarantee much profit, according to a report published on the website. In fact, working harder than this can do more harm to the body, especially when a person is already suffering from heart disease.

“You only need to exercise for 150 minutes five days a week or 30 minutes each day,” advises Dr Ruchit Shah, an interventional cardiologist at Masina Hospital, Mumbai. Which should include aerobics, weight training and stretching etc. You can also do these in a rotational way. Doing so is good for both physical and mental health. If you feel any discomfort during exercise, stop immediately and get yourself tested before doing any high-intensity workouts.”

According to information received from Dr Shalin Thakor, Senior Interventional Cardiologist, Shelby Hospitals Ahmedabad, “Regular exercise increases your heart rate, improves your heart muscle and helps in increasing your lung capacity. On the other hand, excessive exercise and overexertion have been linked to an increased risk of ‘atrial fibrillation’, in which the heart rhythm becomes irregular and can be fatal if not treated in time. could. In addition, it can potentially increase the risk of heart problems, especially in people with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or coronary heart disease.

Dr RR Kasliwal, President, Clinical and Preventive Cardiology at Medanta Hospital, Gurgaon recommends a cardiac work-up before hitting the gym and says, “Just one TMT (treadmill test) doesn’t bite enough for this. These days there is CT angiography which can tell whether there is 40 to 50 percent blockage or not. This type of problem will not be visible on TMT. Always check your heart health before going to the gym or working out.”

He says that this should apply to all those who had stopped working during the pandemic and now they are again following the old routine. Essential because they might not experience a heart attack as a normal pain in the chest.

How is exercise beneficial or harmful for heart health?

Exercising has beneficial effects on the heart, both directly and indirectly. Direct effects such as strengthening of the heart muscle and better ability of the heart to pump blood and indirect effects, workouts reduce the chances of heart attack by controlling blood pressure, sugar, cholesterol and body fat.

It all depends on the training level of the person. Thumb rule is that while doing any exercise, there should be no increase of more than ten percent of the effort compared to the last time. The weather during this time should also be taken care of. Outdoor exercise should be avoided in weather conditions because even a healthy person can suffer serious consequences by working out in extreme weather conditions.
